Maria Bock: Baldguy (Skallamann)
This was probably my favourite film of all the International Shorts I saw last night at the Chauvel Cinema as part of the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival (HRAFF).
Its a 12minute film and follows a boy who tells his parents he made out with this bald guy. His mother is disgusted - “couldn’t he at least have made out with someone with hair?” - but comes to realise her son’s excitement is just the same as when she met her husband when they were young. Its Norweigan with subtitles, and yes, they pretty much sing for most of the 12 minutes. Its great!
The other film I adored, both for the message and for the wonderful animation (I’ve never seen animation quite like it, its beautiful) was Barking Island (Chienne d’Histoire) by Serge Avedikian and you can see it at the link below.
